Lian's name is believed to have originated from the term “Lia,” which means flat land, aptly describing its coastal plains. During the Spanish colonial era, Lian was merged with the neighboring town of Nasugbu on March 28, 1903. However, it regained its status as an independent municipality on January 1, 1915, through Executive Order No. 127 signed by Governor-General Francis Burton Harrison.
Situated along the western coast of Batangas, Lian is a third-class municipality encompassing an area of 76.80 square kilometers. It boasts a diverse topography, with approximately 40% flat plains and 60% rolling hills. The municipality is bordered by Nasugbu to the north and Calatagan to the south.
