I started playing hockey at the age of 8, but is when I was 12 when I began officiating. Officiating hockey is a passion of mine. I love the feeling of being on the ice, always being faced with a challenge, and working as a team with other officials.
I have had the privileged to do games across the province, attend national development camps, and travel to other countries for games.
Looking at what hockey has done for my teaching, the skill that first comes to mind is leading. Through officiating I have learned how to be in charge, as well as how to react under pressure. Another teaching related skill I have been taught is the skill of being proactive, rather than reactive. In hockey, this is preventing problems before they occur, whereas with teaching, I prefer to think of it as ensuring lesson are organized to run smoothly. Another skill that comes up throughout officiating is treating disrespect with respect. Trying to diffuse these situations are key as it is always important to keep your door open and allow for people to ask questions

Hiking is an activity I have only recently gotten into. I enjoy both short day hikes and multiple day hikes. My goals for hiking include traveling to Cape Scott and High Rim Trail
Although I've only done a few, planning for multiple day hikes implanted the idea of detailed planning and always be prepared, especially for the unexpected. Planning is crucial for the classroom, in the sense that you must think of every scenario possible, how will it change your lesson? how can you adjust?
I grew up playing Lacrosse in the Comox Valley, and eventually began to move to Victoria in the summers to play. My career highlight is getting called to be an emergency backup for the Victoria Shamrocks.
Because I had played lacrosse for a long time, for different teams, the sport was able to teach me the aspects of coaches and mentors that I found to be beneficial, the kind that I want to use in my class.
