Hello! My name is Lia Goodman, and I’m an FIU Honors College student majoring in Political Science, minoring in Environmental Studies, and earning an undergraduate certificate in Women’s and Gender Studies. My academic pursuits are driven by a commitment to strengthen legislation devised to protect low-lying areas from the consequences of coastal flooding in the face of rising sea levels.
As a South Florida native, I’ve witnessed firsthand the detrimental effects that climate change has on our community, especially in vulnerable coastal regions. These experiences have fueled my passion to advocate for effective hazard mitigation strategies that not only protect these communities but also prepare them for the increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events. I'm particularly interested in mobilizing disaster resilience and environmental justice to ensure that individuals of all backgrounds are equipped for these challenges.
Given that those most at risk of environmental hazards are often the least represented in conversations regarding climate solutions, I'm dedicated to centering the voices of marginalized communities in this process. Through my academic studies and extracurricular work, I aim to uplift and advocate for policies that prioritize inclusivity, equity, and resilience. I believe that any successful approach to addressing climate change must be comprehensive, ensuring that all communities, regardless of socioeconomic status or background, have the resources and support they need to adapt and thrive in an increasingly uncertain climate.
Ultimately, my goal is to contribute to the development of sustainable and equitable policies that tackle the dual environmental and social dimensions of the climate crisis.
