Q: What is the P.E.R.T?
A: The P.E.R.T. is a standardized test that covers basic reading, writing and Algebra 1 skills. To be able to take college classes as a Dual Enrollment student, you HAVE TO pass the test in order to take college classes/ remain in the program.
Q: What if a student does not pass one or more sections of the P.E.R.T?
A: Students are allowed one opportunity to retest for the P.E.R.T. at the LHS campus and multiple times through HCC.
Q: What is an alternative to completely dropping a course
A: As a Collegiate student, you are permitted ONE course petition in which you are allowed to retake a class you did not earn a "C" passing grade.
Q: What are the consequences of dropping/withdrawing from a course?
A: Dropping a course after the drop/add deadline will result in a withdrawal (W) shown on your transcript. However, if you drop/add a course before the deadline no reflection will be made on your transcript. It can also affect how much financial aid you can get in the future when applying for college.
Q: Do I need to register for a course myself or does my counselor do it for me?
A: If you are interested in enrolling for a class that is not already in the standard Collegiate schedule, then you will have to apply on your own using Form B.
Q: When do I begin the process of registering for a course?
A: LHS will regularly make announcements when Form Bs are due for the upcoming term. More information can be found on the HCC website. However, Dual Enrollment students have different deadlines compared to the average student at HCC for form deadlines.
Where do I return my textbook after the term is completed?
A: Once the term is completed return your book back to guidance.
Q: Do I need to take summer courses?
A: YES. If you did not pass a course needed to graduate, then it is recommended to take a class over the summer to recover the missing credit.
Q: Do I need to take A.P courses?
A: NO. If you are not confident that you can pass the AP class, then do not take it. There are plenty of easier DE alternatives through HCC.
Q: What is needed to earn college credit for taking an HCC course?
A: "C" or higher in the class.
Q: How often is programming?
A: Meeting your guidance counselor for programming only happens once a year, (during the 2nd semester) so be prepared with what classes you want to take next year. You can of course request to meet with your counselor at a different time throughout the year if necessary. However, once the new school year begins it is very unlikely that your schedule will be changed.
Q: What happens if I don't earn a passing "C" grade in a course?
A: Then you will not receive college credit.
Q: What if I can't remember my hawkmail email or password?
A: Look back at your original admissions email when you enrolled for HCC. It should have your email and HCC I.D. number in there. The default password for HCC is Captial first initial and lowercase last initial with HCC I.D. number.
Q: Do dual enrollment courses have midterms and finals?
A: It depends on your class and professor. It is recommended to look at your syllabus for the class to check.
