Wood Badge & NYLT - A Winning Combination!

When a Scouter attends Wood Badge, they learn skills that help them become a better leader and improve their unit. When a Scout attends NYLT, they also learn skills that help them become a better leader and improve their unit. Troops, Crews, and Ships that send Scouts to NYLT and Scouters to Wood Badge have both adult and youth leaders who are in tune with the latest leadership theories and are ready to work together to improve their units and provide a better experience for all Scouts in their unit. These units are typically the most successful units in a Council and consistently have better retention and advancement. Send your Scouts to NYLT and your Scouters to Wood Badge to ensure your unit is part of this winning combination!

What is NYLT?

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is a leadership course for Scouts in Scouts BSA, Venturing, and Sea Scouts that meet certain requirements (age, training, rank, etc.). It is considered the youth version of Wood Badge.

The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what a leader must KNOW, and what a leader must DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. The skills come alive during the week as the patrol goes on a Quest for the Meaning of Leadership.

NYLT is a six-day course. Content is delivered in a troop and patrol outdoor setting with an emphasis on immediate application of learning in a fun environment. Interconnecting concepts and work processes are introduced early, built upon, and aided by the use of memory aids, which allows participants to understand and employ the leadership skills much faster.
