Diversity & Inclusion
I recognize that systemic oppression of racial, ethnic, sexual, and religious minorities is a consistent fact of history and continues today at the individual and institutional levels. Although it is clear that systemic oppression requires large-scale change, I believe individuals have unique power to strive for and implement justice. As such, I am committed to:
Continuously reflecting on and challenging my own assumptions and biases
Highlighting and reforming oppressive systems in academia, the local community, and the national community
Calling out instances of discrimination
Teaching about and encouraging discussion of the scientific contributions of underrepresented folks to science as well as the ways that science has been used as a tool for oppression
Befriending, learning from, citing, listening to, and elevating the voices of underrepresented and marginalized people in and outside of academia.
