Hey there! I'm Bailey, a high school senior and Girl Scout Ambassador. I've been with the Girl Scouts for twelve years and have always been a proponent of civil justice and equality. I'm president of my high school's Sexuality and Gender Alliance (SAGA), Editor-in-Chief of our Student Literary and Art Magazine, and Managing Editor of the student newspaper The Streak. This Gold Award project is very near and dear to me, and I'm thrilled that I get to share it with the world.
The Warren Hills High School SAGA is composed of wonderful students searching for a better, more diverse world. We work to promote acceptance, education, and awareness of the LGBTQ+ community, and will never cease to stop working towards our goal of inclusivity. Our mission statement is, "The Sexuality and Gender Alliance’s mission is to create a safe space for all students regardless of gender identity, gender nonconformity, or sexual orientation. All students have the right to a persecution-free environment in which to learn, and this can only be accomplished through education, support, social action, advocacy, and the raising of awareness in the school community. SAGA welcomes lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQ+) persons and their heterosexual and cisgender allies."
The Girl Scouts are dedicated to promoting gender equality for young girls and women. Founded in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low, the organization has supported millions of young people in the last century. Along with dozens of other incredible opportunities, the Girl Scouts offer the Gold Award, the highest achievement a Scout can earn, at the Senior and Ambassador levels (high school years). This award stands out on college and job applications, and is a great source of fulfillment for the awardee.
Though this is an independent Girl Scout project, you can support our efforts by joining your local Pride organization at your middle or high school, college, or town assembly, or start your own!
