These six icons have taken on every challenge thrown their way, never hesitating to work towards their dreams. They've advanced our rights, our horizons, and our entertainment, and for that, they deserve to be known. We are dedicated to being their microphone to the modern world.
After 132 hours of research, editing, collaboration, painting, and presenting, I, Bailey E. Kelly, and my SAGA team were met with confirmation that this Gold Award has been approved. The project was honored at the 2023 Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey Gold Award ceremony. Thank you to all who joined us!
Presentations (June and October, 2022)
SAGA presented our showcase on June 1, 2022, to over 500 students in six blocks of forty minutes. SAGA answered questions, engaged with the audience, and educated the student body on LGBTQ+ history. Great job, SAGA!
On Oct. 18, 2022, SAGA was joined by the Warren Hills High School Drama Club and Student Council in presenting for a second time in collaboration with Student Council's NJASC Top 10 Project winner D.A.R.E. to Imagine, a multi-club effort to spread love, encouragement, and inspiration. The Drama Club performed speeches, poems, and monologues they had written as each queer icon, advancing the presentation's engagement. Thank you, Drama!
Making our Posters (June-July, 2022)
While juggling her summer job and hobbies, Bailey and her team collaborated to create posters inspired by the 1979 Gay Pride flag, with each figure dedicated to one of the six colors and stripes. The posters are a collage of the icon's life and accomplishments, edited, recolored, and cropped in the digital art platform Procreate.
Painting the Mural (June-August, 2022)
Bailey spent the summer communicating with her team regarding the design and details of the mural to be hung in the Warren Hills High School library. Inspired by the 1979 Gay Pride flag and matching with the posters, this mural now hangs proudly for all students and teachers to see and learn from.
