An important role for our AAUP-LFC chapter is making faculty endorsements for college governance committee elections. AAUP-LFC seeks to advance specific values and ideals at the college, particularly strengthening shared governance, academic freedom, and the economic security of all faculty, and one way to do this is to recommend faculty members who are willing and committed to advancing these goals.
For more detail about why our chapter makes recommendations, who decides, what criteria are used, and why we think an endorsement process will strengthen shared governance at the college, please see our FAQ about the AAUP-LFC Endorsement Process.
For those who are less familiar with the governance committee structure at Lake Forest college and would like to learn more, please see our Guide to Governance Committees.
The current members of the AAUP-LFC Faculty Governance & Elections Committee are:
Ajar Chekirova, Assistant Professor of Politics
Sara Jamshidi, Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Mathematics
Chloe Johnston, Associate Professor of Theater
Desmond Odugu, Professor of Education
The Faculty Governance & Elections Committee use the following criteria to determine faculty recommendations for each governance committee election, which take place each Spring semester. Note that all of the following will be considered but are not requirements:
Willingness and commitment to serve on the committee
Willingness to take the representative role of the elected position seriously, through seeking faculty input and reporting back to faculty as appropriate
Commitment to promoting equitable and fair faculty policies and the equitable treatment of all faculty
A commitment to transparency (while respecting confidentiality) about the work of the committee
A track record of, or expressed support for, faculty advocacy, especially around issues of economic security, strengthening shared governance, and/or defending academic freedom
Willingness to speak up and potentially disagree publicly with colleagues and/or senior administrators
AAUP chapter membership (preferred but not required)
Experience serving as a faculty representative on elected or appointed committees or chairing a department / program
The committee will also consider faculty burnout and the equitable distribution of service labor
Note that these are simply recommendations; every faculty member can vote for whomever they choose, and the endorsed candidates are not beholden to the chapter in any way.
