Date: March 13th, 2024
Length of Activity: 1 hour
Prep Time: ~10 hours
Learners: ~25 medical residents, 3 pharmacy residents, 2 pharmacy students
Comfort Level: Medium
Teaching Goals Addressed:
SMART Goal 5: Improve my lecture skills by presenting two one-hour long presentations for medical and pharmacy residents over the residency year.
Teaching Materials: PowerPoint presentation
Method Used to Assess Learner Understanding: Questions were asked throughout the presentation slides
Reflection: This was my second lecture to present to the internal medicine/family medicine residents at Unity Health, and even though I was still nervous to lecture, I was more confident compared to my first lecture. A change that I made from my first lecture presentation was including active learning throughout my presentation; I provided five multiple choice questions sprinkled throughout the lecture to encourage active participation. I think that this allowed me to keep my audience's attention better than if I had just talked at my audience the entire hour. I think that overall, the residents were very receptive to the lecture content as I had many questions over the material both during and after lecture. I did not provide an evaluation for the residents to fill out for this lecture, but several of them told me that my lecture contained a lot of helpful information for their clinical practice. Overall, my confidence in presenting to this type of audience and my confidence in my own clinical knowledge has greatly increased from the lecture I presented August to this lecture.
