Fair, secure, and accessible elections are the cornerstone of our democracy. But a referendum question that will be on the ballot on November 4th takes aim at Maine’s safe and secure voting system, including absentee voting. This referendum would make it harder for people across the state to vote – especially seniors, Mainers with a disability, and Mainers without reliable transportation. The exact wording is:
"Do you want to change Maine election laws to eliminate two days of absentee voting, prohibit requests for absentee ballots by phone or family members, end ongoing absentee voter status for seniors and people with disabilities, ban prepaid postage on absentee ballot return envelopes, limit the number of drop boxes, require voters to show certain photo ID before voting, and make other changes to our elections?”

This election, Mainers have the opportunity to pass a common sense red flag initiative that temporarily limits an individual's access to deadly weapons if a court deems they're a danger to themselves or others. 21 states already have these laws in place, including states like Florida and Indiana, which enacted the laws after experiencing tragic mass shootings of their own, much like the horrific shooting we experienced here in Lewiston two years ago. The exact wording is:
"Do you want to allow courts to temporarily prohibit a person from having dangerous weapons if law enforcement, family, or household members show that the person poses a significant danger of causing physical injury to themselves or others?"
