ENVIRONMENT RESEARCH

Given that my production was primarily an animation exercise, I was conscious that the environment was not the primary focus. However, I am aware of how much effect an environment can have on the tone and direction of a film.

For my fight scene, I figured an interior environment would make for a much more interesting sequence as having a reckless goliath swinging a hammer around indoors would provide opportunities for spectacle and give the smaller character room to utilise the environment to her advantage.

Much like in the Lord of the Rings footage, I felt like a derelict church/temple style environment would work well as it would provide plenty of cover for the smaller character and be visually interesting with destruction of pillars etc.

Since I had decided on a church and part of our other modules required us to go to York, I thought it was a perfect opportunity to visit the York Minster and gain some inspiration for what I would eventually end up modelling. I didn't intend on recreating the Minster exactly, but gathering reference in regards to layout and detail certainly couldn't hurt when it came time to creating my environment.

I ended up taking around 150 photos inside, trying to capture the general layout but also the finer details that would help me when it came time to making my version.

Inside, there was also a tiny 3d model depicting the entire church. It isn't necessarily relevant to me, since I likely won't be modelling the outside however it can help with the general layout.

Here are just a few of the photos that I took, ranging from wall detailing, glass, pillars and floors. There were also detailed breakdowns of how the roofs were structured, as well as an exhibit on the restoration of the stained glass.
