It is interesting to measure the changes a hundred years has brought. Daily life in Montgomery County at the turn of the last century was in many ways a simpler life, but it was a life without much of we now take for granted: automobiles, electricity, refrigeration, or indoor plumbing.

Montgomery County was still mostly rural, with far fewer people. People lived on farms or in very small towns or villages. Days were filled with backbreaking physical labor, and everyday chores were accomplished without the help of modern conveniences. It was a time when things moved more slowly, a time when roles were more clearly defined. It was a time when families worked together but they also played together.

The following pages on Daily Life reveal how residents lived, worked, played, and went to school in Montgomery County at the turn of the 20th century.
