How it all started?
•We Brainstormed the ideas to be valuable for our project concerning the COVID situation;
•Identified the adaptive and most meaningful to us missions;
•Created the plan of actions and activities to be done to fulfill the missions’ aims.
Project "Young Students as Critical Science Detectives" will try to answer these questions
It all started in 2019.
The First Partner meeting took place in Denmark.
After the first missions were identified, we had many interesting educational activities, such as: we tried ourselves as detectives searching for the ways how to help the community.
We liked the idea to meet in Denmark, meet our international team and start our cooperation.
Following the situation in Lithuania and in the world, we asked our school’s community an important question- WHAT CAN WE DO to prevent the spread of COVID, to keep healthy body and mind and to support our families and friends?
In Healthy Body Healthy Mind.
Because of COVID situation in Lithuania, people were forced to stay at home, be more isolated and lead sedentary life. This affected not only body but mind as well. As a result, many people were gaining weight, often felt frustrated or depressed. Understanding that any physical activity would be beneficial in such a situation, Science Detectives and teachers decided to initiate the Safe Walking competition.
We wanted to encourage our fellow students, their parents and family members spend more time in the fresh air walking and monitoring the results with the help of the walking App. Those making the most of it would be awarded. The Initiative was shared via Facebook page of the school.
Walking App: #WALK15
And then we saw the First Results and Success
Still in lockdown...
MISSION: HERB TEA
During the Project meetings, Science lessons, class hours and after talking to the teachers and parents we decided to study plants, helping to fight Influenza or any other viruses. We wanted to take up a mission helping to convince the audience in beneficial use of some herbs by presenting the ideas and sharing the information writing blogs or introducing and sharing healthy recipes on our school’s Facebook page.
Some extracts from the blogs:
Wild raspberry twigs tea
Linden Flower Tea
Ginger and Oranges tea

January as an anti-Covid month
After all information had been collected, another mission was born- to declare January an anti-COVID month and promote our spotted herbs as a strong means helping to resist the viruses. We saw this initiative as a simple domestic way to keep healthy and fight the viruses in the way everybody could afford. Parents and students were asked to take pictures of the “Covid fighting” process. The photos were used to share on Facebook page or via Messenger groups to spread the idea.
First Photos and Second Success
International collective work
Together with the partners from Greece, Poland, Romania and Turkey we created an E book of herbs.
Students-partners sent us their research pages containing scientific and historical information about the medicinal use of plants in their countries. As a result we have got a multinational book of useful plants.

Awoken Curiosity
By doing this we aimed:
• to awake students and parents’ curiosity,
•unite the community,
•encourage to do something important together, even during the hard times of Covid and lockdown;
•make people believe that even staying at home, we can act and make changes, at least to our personal lives.
To the Skeptics and unbelievers…
•Even though some skeptics might disagree with the idea of herbs, we were sure that as long as we believe in what we are doing, as long as people support our initiative, all together we can overcome the difficulties, stress, self-isolation, frustration and thus, in our way, we can resist and fight COVID.
Another way of fighting against COVID and resisting it was getting to know the virus better by studying it deeper. So, the teachers and the team members suggested to integrate some COVID related tasks into curricular. By doing this we aimed to educate ourselves and learn more about the unknown traitorous virus.
Mission: COVID chalenges
Due to the COVID situation in the world and lock down because of the pandemic, we set up a mission explaining people about COVID threats and how to protect ourselves.
First, we integrated this mission into learning of English. As a result, we created and did some tasks connected with the topic "COVID"
The COVID situation was new to us and to the world. People felt afraid and frustrated. In order to know the feelings of our students we asked them to answer some questions concerning their feelings and attitude towards the unexpected conditions they had to live in and share their advice how to adapt to the new way of life.

What would you like to tell people and society?
What do you feel? What do you like and dislike now?
What advice would you give people?
What can people do now to make and promote a positive change?
