I grew up in Cattai with 2 brothers and my parents who owned a painting and decorating business. My father always had a building project on the go, from chicken coops and garden beds to the new verandah and balcony around the house. As an owner builder, he built a double brick two storey house with his own hands. With most people in the building trades this is how we gain our interest, at an early age, helping our fathers.
I had a few different jobs after school but nothing really clicked, until in 1997 I started as a labourer for my elder brothers new floor sanding company with a role specifically engaging in what is called rough sanding or level sanding of particle floors. A successful, reliable portfolio of builders was established from what started as only a couple of clients. I was in a leading hand role; training new fellow employees, liaising with construction supervisors and managers and on the tools 6 days a week.
With a passion for my work the years passed with memories of being part of some great key projects such as the Sydney 2000 Olympic Village. I witnessed the evolving suburbs of Kellyville, The Ponds, Oran Park, Glenmore Park and recently Marsden Park, Box Hill, Austral and surrounds. Even the growth of Central Coast, Newcastle, Wollongong to Nowra and Southern Highlands gave me my fair share of travel time with even an occasional Goulburn and Canberra run.
20 or so years forward, making the although exciting decision to create my own business, also involved the heart crushingly difficult task of handing in my notice from a company I literally put blood, sweat and tears into for decades. Definitely a tough thing to do, but to move forward in life, sometimes we have to make tough choices to have a more foreseeable future.
Christina is my true blessing in life. She is my best friend and soul mate. As cliched as it is, it is true. I thought I was a fairly organised person until I met Christina, yet there is a reason her career as an events manager has been a success. Her input has been invaluable to us. We have been married since 2014 and I have a quote that jokingly sums up us. "Marrying Christina was the best decision she ever made for me!"
Starting out in the middle of covid has its downfall but all of us are in the same boat and maybe this can help us all to appreciate friends, family and colleagues. "Without my wife, Christina, none of this would be possible!" Having the support of those close to you is very important.
