Our Group

Dr. Leung is passionate about pushing the frontiers of optical imaging+sensing technologies to bolster biomedical research. Her research group seeks to exploit nanophotonics and quantum principles in the manipulation of various degrees of freedom of light to achieve breakthroughs in the performance of optical microscopy, sensing, and metrology. She currently serves on the editorial board of SPIE's Journal of Optical Microsystems and is on the Photonics West conference program committee. She is also currently the chair of Optica's Applied Spectroscopy Technical Group

We are hiring PhD students and Postdoctoral Fellows to come join us in developing next-generation microscopy technologies! Interested students and fellows are encouraged to reach out to the PI here to learn more about the various opportunities.

Hsiao Chih Huang   | Postdoc | Physics (Joint with Liao Lab)

Dr. Huang has devoted himself to two research topics of optical orbital angular momentum and photon quantum entanglement since his PhD career at National Taiwan University. After receiving his PdD certificate, he spent 13 years of his academic careers in Taiwan, South Africa and the Czech Republic, working on several projects in the fields of quantum optics, nonlinear optics, ultrafast optics, optical microscopy, and quantum sensing. Additionally, during these academic careers, he held various short-term senior optical engineer positions in the photonics and laser industries. He is currently working on a multidisciplinary project, integrating his previous research topics, at Indiana University Bloomington.

Vishwajeet Ekal   | M.S. Student | Computer Science

I'm Vishwajeet Ekal, currently pursuing a Master of Science in Computer Science. I'm deeply fascinated by the potential of AI and ML to revolutionize industries and solve complex problems. Alongside my studies, I'm diving into the fascinating realm of Meta-Optics, exploring the intersection of computer science and optics to develop innovative solutions. Beyond academia and research, I'm a passionate cricket enthusiast and a devoted fan of manga and anime. Whether I'm analyzing complex algorithms, cheering on my favorite cricket team, or immersing myself in the captivating worlds of manga and anime, I'm always eager to explore new horizons and connect with fellow enthusiasts. Let's share insights, swap recommendations, and perhaps even collaborate on projects that merge our passions with cutting-edge technology. Together, we can explore new horizons and make meaningful contributions to our respective fields. Looking forward to connecting with like-minded individuals!

Aaron Leevord Fernandes  | M.S. Student | Intelligent Systems Engineering

I'm a budding researcher at Indiana University, weaving together my background in electronics, telecommunication engineering, machine learning and optical engineering to unlock new potentials in Meta Optics. Formerly an ambitious software developer, I now channel my energies into pioneering advancements in meta optical material design, ML/DL, RL and image processing. Yeah, I'm one of those people who think AI, ML/DL can solve any problem—maybe a bit deluded, but always driven!  When I'm not delving into research, I'm an aspiring culinary explorer, always on the hunt for the next tantalizing recipe to master. Other than that, I also enjoy basketball and immersing myself in the world of manga!

Kefu Mu | PhD student | Intelligent Systems Engineering | M.S. ISE (neuroscience engineering)

I'm just a small researcher with a background in computer science, neuroscience, and psychology who aims to save the universe. I was once a game designer who tirelessly churned out games in an attempt to make a fortune during the pandemic, and a counseling psychologist whose expertise seemingly lies only in advising friends to break up. Dreaming of pioneering optical imaging techniques with even greater depth and higher temporal resolution for use in brain research, and outside of that, I'm just a food enthusiast and cooking aficionado—a walking, talking food menu~

Key Collaborators

The Leung Research group actively collaborates with the Liao Research Group in the development of advanced imaging technologies. Dr. Liao is an Associate Professor of Physics at Indiana University Bloomington and is an expert on ultrafast physics. His group focuses on experimental quantum sciences and technology of light. In particular, the new research projects are on the intersections of quantum optics, structured illumination (topological photonics), x-ray optics, imaging science, strong-field, and ultrafast (femtosecond to attosecond) physics.

Chi3 Optics is an industry partner that the group works closely with to develop custom light sources that facilitate the testing of new imaging concepts.
