Let Us Rot is a research-creation project that uses mixed media visual arts to explore rot, decomposition, and death as a vital component to the life of human and non-human species alike. Speculating that our perspectives on rot, decay, death, and the afterlife all impact our relationship to the earth, including how we treat the land and other species we interact with. Due to these views often being embedded in religious and spiritual belief systems, spirituality and ecological awareness are often deeply interwoven. I believe that connecting with other species within an artistic, spiritual practice can positively shift these perspectives to view decomposition as constructive and transformative. This collection of works uses found organic materials in combination with other mediums to investigate what it might mean to commune with other-than-human life as a spiritual art practice. Through the relationship formed between artist and material, I intend to challenge anthropocentric narratives around death and promote a deeper acceptance and connection to Earth’s natural cycles.
