It's a common misconception that leopard geckos come from very arid environments like deserts. However, they are found in a variety of ecosystems with varying levels of humidity, foliage, and other wildlife.
Leopard geckos have been found in Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, India, and Nepal.
Environment
In Iran, leopard geckos were found "...in the mountains...[The soil] is not sandy at all. It is packed clay, rocky and there are also quite a few dry adapted plants. In small caves [herptologists] found some zagros-newts/ Neurergs kaiseri, telling [them] that the region will not regularly dry out completely" (Karsten Griesshammer)
In Afghanistan, leopard geckos were found "along the Kabul River and its tributaries, its range extending into northern Pakistan. [Leopard Geckos] can be found in the Hindu Kush Mountains. [Their] habitat includes rocky desert and sparse grassland, but [they] avoid sand. [They do] not live in large colonies and [are] most active in April and May" (Animalia)
In Pakistan, "a leopard gecko may climb several feet to reach its permanent selected resting place, which it shares with several individuals of different ages. Almost all geckos at the site come out as soon as sun sets, and are scattered to forage individually around, returning to the site one by one just before dawn. However, in forested places of their habitat, they become semi-arboreal and hide under loose tree bark... Summer temperature in the Potohar Plateau ranges from 22-24 °C in March to 40-45° C in June-July, Humidity varies from 30-40 %. Until monsoon rains start, temperature drops to 28-33 °C and humidity increases 70-80 % which drive the leopard geckos out in large numbers during hot humid nights. During March-June, humidity in the resting spaces remain 40-56 %" (Muhammad Sharif Khan)
In Iraq, leopard geckos "were collected from a transitional zone of the Mesopotamian Shrub Desert and Zagros Mountains Forests Steppe eco-regions...[this habitat] is a broad landscape of rocky and limestone foothills, arid grasslands with sparkly vegetated steeps across most of central Iraq" (Journal of Herpetology)
In India, leopard geckos were found "deep in the forests of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh...The species appears to be common in the hill forests...The new species lives in dry evergreen forests mixed with scrub and meadows. It is strictly nocturnal, actively foraging along trails in the forest after dusk..." (Mirza ZA, Gnaneswar C)
Leopard geckos were "found inhabiting the plainlands of Nepal...[the leopard gecko] is a ground-dwelling lizard, which was first found in Kamdi corridor in Banke district" (THT Online)
"The habitat appears to be more mesic and densely vegetated than that at other localities where this species is known to occur. However, the mixed hardwood forests in the lower Sivalik Hills within the corridor are drained only by intermittent streams and represent the driest mountain eco-system in Nepal" (IRCF)
