Building on a Solid Foundation

PRAYER

God, we are reminded that as we sit here now, You are gazing at us with love and holding us in Your glorious presence. We will pause for a moment and think about this.

READING

Matthew 7:24-29 (NLT)

24 “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.25 Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. 26 But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. 27 When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”

28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 for he taught with real authority—quite unlike their teachers of religious law.

REFLECT

Do you remember the Sunday school song: The Wise Man Built His House? Its one of the first songs children learn because the meaning is quite simple to understand. Build your house on sand and it won't last. Build your house on a rock and it will. The house being spoken about in the Scriptures is us! If we live our life based on the teachings of Christ, it is like we are building a house on a rock. Jesus is our firm foundation.

When we live our life based on the truth of God's word, we can be strong when "rains and floods" come. The pandemic has certainly been a type of flood. Other types of floods might be anxiety, school work load, relational conflict, and other insecurities. The knowledge that God is with us and will help us through these floods, is the firm foundation that gets us through.
