How to See the Eclipse
Always protect your eyes with the special eclipse glasses
From Santander, find a good place with a clear view to the west. One good place is the lighthouse where you can order a drink in the bar there and enjoy the sunset afterwards. Alternatively, you can take the trail "senda costera" that starts around the bar and follow the coast eastwards until you find the "perfect spot". From Hotel Santemar you can get to the lighthouse by bus, or a quick taxi ride. There is a nice walk bordering the coast that would take about 1 hour. Coming back from the lighthouse may be tricky as many people will head that way, so be prepared to enjoy a nice walk at dusk. There should be plenty of light out until 1 to 2 hours after the eclipse ends so a walk back is not a bad option.
TBD : If weather is bad in Santander, we may organize a bus trip to the mountains or another suitable place for people interested. If weather is good is better to avoid this option since roads will certainly experience traffic jams, specially on the way back. Cost for this trip (~20 EUR/person) is not included in the fee.
Images below show the Sun shadow on August 12 at the time of the eclipse. The beach in front of the hotel (top-left) should have spots from which you can see the eclipse. Also from portions in the nearby "Peninsula de la Magdalena" on the right side of the top-left image below. Another good option is "Parque the Las Llamas" nearby will have a clean view to the west. On August 12th, high tide is at 5:14 PM, and low tide is at 11:24 PM, so at 8:28 PM the beach will still be covered by some water, but similar to the picture shown below. The coastal area around the light house (bottom-left) is also a great spot with plenty of room for 1000s of people. See link to "senda costera" above.
