Hi! I am a materials scientist/engineer, did my Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Center for Nanoscale Materials and Chemical Science & Engineering divisions at Argonne National Laboratory, IL, USA as well as at the Electrical Engineering department at University of Toronto, Canada. I received my Ph.D. in Materials chemistry from University of Toronto, after earning my B.Sc. at York University, Canada. My latest patented work is about developing fast charging batteries, solar cells, membrane technology, nano plasmonic sensors. I am passionate about sharing and contributing scientific knowledge through teaching and research. My goal is to become a meaningful educator who can make an impact on my students’ academic journey.

If you don't see me in the lab, you will find me doing a nature walk, artsy activities, traveling, or just sitting in front of camp fire with my family.

Corwin Deetz

deetz025@d.umn.edu

1st year Chemistry graduate student

My name is Corwin Deetz, I recently graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire. While there, I wrestled for the blugolds for one season. I did research under Dr. Erica Rogers in student motivation and grit. Though, did my most recent research under Dr. Jim Phillips in matrix isolation spectroscopy. For fun I enjoy learning music theory and practicing my guitar. I also enjoy a good game of cribbage. If anyone is looking to play, let me know!

Rowan Simonet

simo0611@d.umn.edu

1st year Chemistry graduate student

Hello! I am currently a chemistry graduate student and did my undergraduate at UMD where I majored in biochemistry and minored in mathematics. I have a variety of previous research experience including work with Dr. Melissa Walls in participatory surveys of Native American communities and working with Dr. Ahmed Heikal to further develop ionic strength FRET probes. I am very excited to further my knowledge in chemistry and physics by working in a materials science lab! It is my eventual career goal to combine my two primary passions by teaching chemistry at the university level.

In my free time I love reading (especially if it's Harry Potter), traveling to unique and far-off places, and testing my creative limits in the ceramics studio.

1st year Applied Materials Science graduate student

Hello, My name is Mark Iwen and I am a first year masters student in the Applied Materials Science program. I graduated from UMD in the spring of 2020 with a B.S. in Biochemistry. I have interests in engineering real world applications to real world problems. I would also like to share my knowledge of products my future company creates as a technical salesman. I enjoy the outdoors and anywhere I can get my hands dirty such as hunting, fishing, hiking, skiing, and mountain biking.

Garrett Broemer

Undergraduate Biology student

Hello! My name is Cameron Hauser and I am currently studying as an undergraduate Biology B.S student. I am very interested in green/sustainable energy and finding ways to improve and work towards methods that may allow us to reach full sustainability. I hope to pursue a career in pharmacy but I am looking at all my options in the biology and chemistry fields. I hope to learn more about material science and how it's used in an applicable sense. In my free time, I enjoy climbing, hiking and reading in my spare time.

Susannah Swanson
