With the advances in deep learning and generative AI technology, comparison studies between humans and AI can not only enhance our understanding of information processing mechanisms underlying human cognition, but also facilitate our understanding of AI systems’ behaviour and interactions with humans. In this talk, I will first compare AI and humans in image classification/object recognition to illustrate how such comparisons can enhance our understanding of both human cognition and AI. I will then compare AI (large language model) and humans in social value judgments using data from the World Value Survey to illustrate why such comparisons are important for evaluating potential ethical issues associated with AI adoption. I will conclude with a theory-of-mind based framework for explainable AI and human-centric benchmarking of AI.
