Teachers set up their planning so that students can plan their own learning at the beginning of the week. Within the plan students will have things that they must do and then they can choose the rest (can do). Following are some examples of how teachers are planning for this in their classes.
In a Year 6, 7 & 8 Collaborative Learning Space the teachers have split their students into three groups according to their ability to self manage their learning. One group is self directed, one group is supported by the teacher and the other group is micro managed. The first two groups plan their learning at the beginning of each day, using a google slide. (see to the right)
The students also have a hand in sheet that they have to put links to their work they have completed into. A traffic light system is used for the hand in sheet. When the student puts in a link the make the box red which means the work is ready to be seen and marked. The teacher can then check the work. They will change the box to either orange which means the work has been checked and has been commented on or green which means the work has been checked and is good to go. If the box is orange the student can action the feedback and then change it yellow for the teacher. This means they have acted on the feedback and it is ready to be checked again.
Hand in Sheet Example (to the right) Please note that the links to the student's work will not work but it is just to give an idea what it looks like, and the colour coding.
One student says, "I really like using toku ako. I can pick what I want to learn and when I want to do it. I know what I need to learn, so that helps me with my to do list."
MUST DO, CAN DO
Giving Student's choice about their learning is very powerful. Must Do, Can Do is a great way to introduce students to Learner Agency. Giving students a list of what they must do then when they have completed that, a list of things they can do and they are able to make the choice. A list of must do's allows for some choice as they can choose which order they complete the tasks in.
