In this lab, the task was to create two network flow maps using ArcGIS Pro. Network flow maps are a powerful tool for illustrating the movement of specific phenomena, such as traffic within a network, like highways. To achieve this, ArcGIS offers various symbolization classes that are useful for visualizing qualitative differences in function values, such as through the use of size intervals for symbols. (Esri n.d).
The first map created for this task is a network flow map illustrating traffic flow in Oregon, using traffic data from the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). In this map, line widths were varied to enhance the readability of traffic volumes. The second map produced is a radial flow map, designed to show the movement of a phenomenon between origins and destinations—for this lab, the amount of mail transported between airports in the United States. This map utilizes airline traffic data from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The result of this lab is illustrated in the images below.
