WHAT IS STEM?

The STEM strand is for SHS students who are inclined toward or have an aptitude for Math, Science, and Engineering studies.

Through the STEM strand, Senior high school students are exposed to complex mathematical and science theories and concepts that will serve as a foundation for their college courses.

ADVANTAGE IN TAKING STEM

STEM is a part of our daily lives as, from science to engineering, any advancement in these fields will provide efficient and cost-effective solutions for various situations and issues in our lives. It enhances the creative thinking of students and fosters confidence in them. Moreover, it also encourages students to develop their problem-solving skills while having fun at the same time. Also, in STEM education, students are taught skills that they can use in the real world. This motivates students to learn, as they know that the skills that they acquire can be utilized immediately and in ways that can positively impact them and their loved ones. The ability to apply their knowledge to new and novel tasks will bode well for them when they enter the workforce.

DISADVANTAGE IN TAKING STEM

Although we are talking about the advantages of taking STEM, we cannot neglect the fact that there are also disadvantages to taking the STEM strand. In taking this program, science subject matter and associated practices often appear distant to learners due to their abstract nature. Consequently, learners experience difficulties making meaningful connections between science and their daily experiences. It may also result in some of the students’ inability to apply the lessons in the real world. Or sometimes, they may just lack the confidence to choose the right course. Lack of confidence builds uncertainty and failure, leading to more problems. Students who freeze at the sight of numbers or equations will most certainly underperform (Hewson S., 2011)

STEM CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

PSYCHOLOGIST

This career is more focused on studying the behavior of a person. Psychology is actively involved in studying and understanding mental processes and brain functions.

PHARMACY

A Pharmacist dispenses drugs prescribed by physicians and other health practitioners and provides information to patients about medications and other uses.

DENTIST

The prevention and treatment of oral illnesses are important aspects of this profession. disorders of the mouth's soft tissues as well as conditions affecting the teeth and their supporting structures

CIVIL ENGINEER

The environment in which we live is created, enhanced, and safeguarded by civil engineers. They organize, design, and manage the creation of infrastructure including roads, railroads, airports, bridges, and dams as well as other building constructions.

MECHANICAL ENGINEER

A mechanical engineer offers specifications for the design, development, development, production, and installation of new or updated mechanical components or systems. Technical aptitude, scientific and mathematical prowess, and problem-solving abilities are requirements for mechanical engineers.
