Elisavet holds a degree in Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology from the University of Cyprus and has taught Greek since 2012. She now works mainly with adult learners and expats.

ABOUT ME AND MY APPROACH TO TEACHING GREEK

Who I Teach

Some of my students are expats who live in Cyprus and want to feel more comfortable in everyday situations. Others need Greek for work, or want to become more involved in the community around them.

I also work with parents, including mothers who want to understand what their children are learning at school and support them in Greek.

Some students come to me because they need to prepare for Greek language exams, including exams connected with citizenship requirements. Others simply want to speak with more confidence in daily life. I also teach complete beginners, including students starting with no previous knowledge of Greek.

What adult learners often find difficult

For complete beginners, the first challenge is usually getting used to the Greek alphabet. As students progress, grammar becomes the next hurdle, noun gender, articles and endings can be confusing, especially for learners whose first language works differently.

The most common difficulty, though, is speaking. Many adult learners understand more Greek than they feel comfortable using. Helping a student become comfortable enough to actually use the language, mistakes included, is a core part of how I teach.

My approach

I usually start with the basics and build from there. The starting point isn't the same for every student, even when two learners share a similar goal. As I get to know a student's level, strengths and difficulties, I adjust the pace, the practice and the areas that need more attention.

I use structured course material together with additional exercises when useful. For beginners, I use material such as Klik sta Ellinika 1 and 2, alongside other resources depending on the learner's needs. The aim is never just to finish a textbook, it's to help you actually understand and use Greek in your own situation.
