1. Wheel

A wheel is a rotating component that supports the vehicle and provides the connection between the tyre and axle.

Functions:

• Supports vehicle load

• Transmits driving/braking forces

• Transfers steering movement

• Provides mounting for the tyre

2. Tyre

A tyre is a rubber component mounted on the wheel that provides contact between the vehicle and road.

Functions:

• Provides road grip/traction

• Absorbs road shocks and vibrations

• Transmits driving and braking forces

• Provides steering control

• Supports vehicle load

Types of Tyres

• Cross-ply (Bias-ply) tyre

• Radial tyre → Most commonly used in modern vehicles

• Tubed tyre

• Tubeless tyre

Important Tyre Terms

• Tread → Provides road grip

• Sidewall → Protects tyre and provides flexibility

• Bead → Holds tyre firmly to the wheel rim

• Carcass → Main load-bearing structure

• Grooves → Drain water and improve wet grip
