Although this project was done in a bit of a time crunch, I think I learned a lot from the activities and observations/background info from the unit. The compositions were difficult to make because they could only be done with the found materials.
For my red composition, I really depended on the theme. I think my mini notebook dictated what that theme was, and brought along with it the origami, crayon, dice, duct tape and clip. The story seems to be about some sort of childhood schoolwork or art perhaps. There are not that many different hues, but there are some value differences. There are a few different textures represented in this composition due to the variation in materials. In terms of visual hierarchy, I think your eyes are drawn first to the concentric circles at the top, then to the notebook, and then to the crane. It is hard to say exactly because, when looking at the 3D version (not image), the crane pops out the most. The negative spaces were not utilized to the best of their ability because of some of the oddly shaped objects, but the negative circles are appealing.
For the blue composition, I found it easier to collect objects with different hues, shades, tints, values, and textures. The first aspect of the composition I tried and kept was the string triangle held by the pin. I liked the movement represented by the triangle and then tried to stick to a theme of triangles (movement) and points. In this composition, your eyes are drawn first to the points (the washer and pin), and then to the paper cross. This composition draws heavily on the variety of color and textures because they all contrast with one another, but are united under "blue." The negative spaces were better utilized in this composition because they have distinct shapes (triangles and rectangles).
The yellow composition was made around the glittery fabric. As soon as I found this fabric I knew I wanted to make it a main part of my piece. I thought it would be neat to put some other object/fabric beneath in order to bring out the glittery fabrics transparency, which worked nicely. When I was made aware of how the glitter looked somewhat like a contour, I decided to work with that as a mini theme. The net of string came from this idea because to speaks to how lines can relate and intersect. I also had found some yellow fabric with dotted line patterns on it, which fit nicely with the feeling of the piece. The circular points of the piece are more random/unexplained, but I really liked the idea of those found objects. However, I think the lines work well to direct your attention from point to point. I think your eyes are drawn to the sparkles first, but then they follow the lines around the board. The negative space was also used well in this composition because these lines create shapes within them.
I enjoyed this project, and would have loved to spend more time with it. Although, it is kind of cool to just accept that these were my first ideas and are still very raw and unfinished.
