John Wilkins (1741-1838)
Paternal 5th Great Grandfather
At 92 he applied for a pension on his Revolutionary Service in Stokes County on 15 March 1833. “Because of his age and infirmities,” he said he couldn’t remember the exact years in which he served but gave the following Declaration:
“In the month of March he first Volunteered as a private in the Company of Capt. Charles McAnally and Lieut. William Meredith and in the Regiment of Maj. (Joseph) Winston and Col. (Martin) Armstrong in the Surry County, North Carolina Militia.”
“His second tour was under Capt. William Hickman whose son Edwin Hickman was the Lieutenant. He was stationed for a while at Salem, guarding prisoners.”
“He again volunteered to serve in the company of Capt. John Morgan and marched to Guilford County before the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, being released in about two weeks.”
He was entered on the North Carolina Pension Roll (Certificate #23533) at $24.88 per year. Sarah Wilkins applied for a widow’s pension on 24 Nov 1839. The file Number is W.9893 in case someone should like to order a copy of the pension record of John and Sarah Wilkins.
