This is an L2A, or Linear Autonomous Animation. L2A is my term for a form of animation I developed in 2008. It combines a fixed linear story path with randomised events and variations. Generative and rule based art existed before this, but L2A is the framework I developed for using those ideas in a clear animation to game development learning model.
Learning how to make an L2A is a strong way to begin understanding the basics of game development. It introduces core ideas such as sequences, triggers, variables, timing, logic, and cause and effect. These are the same kinds of systems that sit behind many games. By making an L2A, you are not just learning animation, you are also learning how interactive systems are built and how a digital experience is structured.
During the year I run virtual workshops for groups who want to learn how to plan, design, and build L2As using Wick Editor, a free online program for game development and animation. These workshops are offered according to interest and popularity. If you are interested, please email me or fill out the form below. When enough intrest is shown I'll post the workshop detail here on Pop'd Events
