Artist Statement
I am an Australian artist working with recycled plastic as a central part of my practice since 2003. My interest in plastic began much earlier, in 1987, while studying Visual and Performing Arts at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga. Since then, I have developed my own techniques for transforming discarded plastic into expressive paintings and sculptural works.
My practice is shaped by a strong connection to abstract expressionism. I am drawn to bold gesture, intuitive composition, and the physical presence of materials. I work with plastic not simply as a surface or substitute, but as a material with its own tension, history, and energy. What has been thrown away carries a previous life, and that history becomes part of the work.
Transformation sits at the heart of what I do. I am interested in reclaiming what is overlooked and giving it a new visual and emotional presence. Through this process, I aim to challenge ideas about waste, value, permanence, and beauty. My work asks viewers to reconsider the potential of discarded materials and to see that renewal, meaning, and even wonder can emerge from what society leaves behind.
