English Language Learner (ELL) Program - Language Instruction for Limited English Proficient (LEP) and Immigrant Students

Supplements the English Language Learner (ELL) Program

The Limestone County School System provides services for English Language Learners (ELLs) who have been identified according to the Home Language Survey, assessed with the WIDA- ACCESS Placement Test (W-APT) and placed in an appropriate English language instruction educational program.The instructional goals of the English Language Learner Program in the Limestone County School System are:1. To increase the level of English Language proficiency annually in English Language Learners in the four language domains : listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as, academic performance of program participants to allow independent functioning in the regular school program; and 2. To provide the ELL the opportunity to reach his/her full potential by attaining English language proficiency on the Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State to State for English Language Learners (ACCESS for ELLs) and other State mandated assessments.The ELL staff recognizes the fact that it takes the limited English proficient (LEP) student one to three years to acquire the social language which is needed to function on a daily basis. And that it takes approximately five to seven years to acquire the language skills needed to fully function in an academic setting. All LEP students receive instruction based upon the student's language proficiency level and their individual needs.The ELL program's main emphasis is on English language acquisition. The instructional materials used are scientifically research based for ELLs. The program also reinforces concepts in the student's content area classes but does not take the place of content instruction in the regular classroom.
