Kentucky Historical Highway Markers
Laurel County has participated in the Kentucky Historical Highway Markers program since 1951. Below are photos of the markers that have been placed in Laurel County since that time. Photos of some of the marker's subjects are also below. The photos appear in the approximate order of the historic events and/or people they represent, not the time when they were placed. This is a facsimilie of the original McNitt Defeat Marker which no longer stands at the site. It is unknown why or when it was removed and replaced with the newer marker shown at right.
This is the marker which currently stands at the site of the McNitt Defeat gravesite.
The burial site of the victims of the McNitt Defeat (Defeated Camp) in the Levi Jackson Wilderness Road Park (formerly State Park). This image was taken before the 2025 tornado caused major damage to the surrounding area.
