President Johnson signs the Voting Rights Act into law on August 6, 1965.
The bodies of James Chaney, Michael Schwerner, and Andrew Goodman were discovered on August 4, 1964. One year and two days later, President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law prohibiting discriminatory voting practices that kept African American voter registration numbers in states like Mississippi incredibly low.
The movement that Chaney, Schwerner, and Goodman gave their lives in support of prompted a changed in federal law to make voting more accessible for all.
