Schwerner, Chaney, and Goodman visit Mt. Zion Methodist Church in Philadelphia, Mississippi after it had been burned by the Klu Klux Klan days before.
Schwerner had worked closely with the congregation of this church in his role at CORE.
After leaving the church, the civil rights workers are arrested for speeding and brought to jail in Philadelphia by Deputy Sheriff Cecil Price.
When Schwerner, Goodman, and Chaney did not return, members of CORE call local hospitals and jails in search of the three young men. When they called the jail in Philadelphia, CORE members were told that there was no one being held by the names of Schwerner, Goodman, or Chaney.
The three civil rights workers were released from the jail in Philadelphia and never returned to the CORE headquarters in Meridian.
The FBI was called to Mississippi to investigate the disappearance of Schwerner, Goodman, and Chaney.
