In 2018, we got our first rat, River, as a single classroom pet. River was a super social hooded agouti doe, & my school kiddos adored her. I quickly realized that she needed a cage mate, & that there was a LOT more to the rat thing than I had originally thought! We added Shoal, a black irish doe, soon after! River & Shoal were an excellent intro to the rat world, & I knew that I was hooked.
I had been raising show rabbits for several years, so the thought of raising rats as well was exciting! I started researching local breeders and added our first few breeder quality rats a few months later.
It has been a process for sure! Those first few 'breeder quality' rats we added ended up not being so amazing after all. We have started & ended several lines, & have learned a lot about the ins & outs of raising rats. Over the years, we have narrowed down our focus (& numbers). We currently work with the following coat types: Standard, Velveteen, & Harley coats. We also work with both standard & dwarf size rats.
