Policing, Governance, Sports, Greater China
My research concentrates on the history and sociology of policing, comparative policing practices, comparative public policy and criminal justice systems. My latest studies also extend to sports and society in the Greater China region. I am working in the Department of Social Sciences at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) as Assistant Professor now, and holding a concurrent appointment as Honorary Fellow at the Centre for Criminology at the University of Hong Kong (HKU).
After receiving my MPhil in politics & PhD in Sociology (Criminology) in HKU, I teach in universities and research in collaboration with practitioners, and regularly engage in the ‘Knowledge Transfer’ Projects in addition to academic publications. I started my career as policy researcher in political parties and NGOs, then teaching politics, sociology and general education subjects in universities before assuming my first faculty position in the Department of Political Science at Lingnan University in 2009. I joined the Department of Social Sciences as Lecturer of HKIed in 2012 and was promoted to tenured track Assistant Professor in 2015. I join the Department of Civic Education and Leadership of NTNU as Associate Professor in August 2025.
My Ongoing Research in Policing & Governance include the Comparative Policing in Asia in Post-COVID19; Decolonized Hong Kong and Macau Policing; Comparative Police Oversight Mechanisms in Asia; Social Media and Policing; Gender & Policing; Ethnic Minorities, New Immigrants & Community Policing; Recruitment &Training of Police in Asia; Job Satisfaction & Police Management; Pluralization of Policing and Private Policing in Practice; Youth, Deviance & Policing.
Sports Sociology Research projects include ‘Youth Uniformed Groups’; ‘Communal Identities for the Sustainable Development of Sports’ & ‘Sports, mental well-being and personal development’; and 'Women and Grassroots Football Development in Hong Kong'; 'Coaching professionalism & Football Development'.
