Designing something is not difficult, but having an eye for good design is another thing. When I first started, I just wanted to make things, but I never had a purpose in it. I didn't realize how graphic design is such an important tool to say a lot with a little (and often an image). More so, how to make a compelling and interesting layout to guide readers' eyes.
Yearbook in high school is what really started my love for design, as well as my opportunities to design in theatre. This led me to major in Graphic Design in my freshman year of college. There, I learned the basics of Adobe products and design hacks/mindsets that I still utilize today.
More often than not, my eye is always looking for good design and how to improve struggling design. And more than anything, I've grown in strengthening my craft to create more effective and beautiful designs. Most of my work has been branding for my own business/start-ups, but I have had the honor of creating logos for friends and organizations!
You might find these elsewhere on my website, but I created them for myself! I designed the logos for my magazine, podcast, and blog, as well as the design for my novella, Our Eclipse.
This logo design was for my best friend, who has started her own event planning business. She does a lot of weddings, but also loves to do birthdays and other fun occasions. She wanted something that had a bit of elegance but was also playful. This was one of my first times working on a brand for someone other than myself, so it was a challenge and a joy! What I loved most about this project is I learned how to alter and edit text to make a logo instead of just using the font I find in a package.
I was asked by my campus ministry, Chi Alpha, to make a design based on an idea they have had for around four years. They wanted the Last Supper in a minimalist design for stickers and t-shirts! This is by far one of my favorite designs that I've made.
I made theses following designs for a friend in Arkansas for her church and then also for her youth group!
I made this for a friend of mine in college in the new business he started! He works on going to people's homes to fix their cars instead of them having to come to him! Making it more efficient and easier for his customers.
Oftentimes, while I was an Office Assistant in the JREM building, I was asked to design flyers, thank you cards, and other designs for events. It definitely wasn't in the job description, but because I had a design background, they would often ask me! Here are just two that I kept from my time working there.
I was cast in this show and was able to help make the poster for it!
This is the poster is for the play I wrote and directed to be produced on zoom!
I made this for the second MTR.
This was a challenge on Instagram to make a cover design based on the movie soul. This is what I came up with!
All of these designs were a give away I did on my Instagram page @lauralee.creates. What I did was take their answers from the template I made and made a structure to visualize their personalities.
I made these by making real marks on paper with paint and other supplies. (This idea was actually inspired by a previous assignment in Graphic Design.) Then I would upload the marks into Photoshop, edit the colors and cut them out, then move them around to make the collage.
This was our first project to get us used to Indesign (which I was already familiar with). Our project was to use our name and make it represent what we thought our name meant. And of course, also for it to look appealing. I did one of connection, I really liked how the "a" and "u" attached as well as the "r" and "a". I also enjoyed the elegant look, because my name is Laura Lee, but he said to just do our first names, and Laura seems so formal to me!
For this project, we had to describe the word with only using fonts and anything we could find on the keyboard.
For this project, we were given a topic and certain pictures we were able to use. Then, each of us was assigned a magazine style we had to recreate. I got Esquire, a men's magazine with fashion, politics, pop culture, celebrity interviews, and food. This is the layout I ended up with!
Sadly, I wasn't in class when we were assigned groups and told to come up with a name for a restaurant and the food they sold. So, then I had to design a seafood restaurant for a meme about Grimace from McDonald's. But I accomplished it! My professor liked the one on the left more, but I like the right more!
For this project, we had to turn a fast-food restaurant menu into a 5-star restaurant. This was done by changing the name, revamping their menu, and, of course, raising the prices.
For this project we had to create a series of shapes, a pattern from those shapes, and 3D foldables.
Black and White
Complementary
Analogous
Triadic
For this project, we had to pick a random word along with a favorite band. From there, we had to make a mood board for a potential music album. I got the word Ground and chose the band AJR.
For this project we had to make a play on words visually only with letters. This could be done with quotes or puns.
We had to choose a word and then express it visually. I tried to think of the idea of the beginning of the word idea, like the messiness, and the building blocks.
We had to take seven photos that all came together to tell a story. So we had to be creative with the pictures we took as well as the colors and filters we used over them. I told a journey of freedom.
For this we had to work with words like Crowbar and Hotdog and create images that showcase them. We got to choose one of the two we chose, and I chose Crowbar. We then had to come up with funny slogans for them as well as designs for them.
For this project we had to picture a friend and have them take a personality test. After, we had to take portraits of them and then design their personality around their portrait. Angelica's personality main traits that I went for was welcoming, kind, and reserved.
For this project we had to take a still photo of a hobby for a specific person. Mine was an older lady who enjoyed theatre. So we made a profile for this made up person and took an image that would target then.
For this project we had to choose an object and take different picture of the different objects we found and arrange them in a pleasing way. I chose bottle caps and I tried to do a spiral that expands outward for my arrangement.
For this project we had to choose an object to create a poster for world design day. I ended up choosing perfume, but by choosing perfume I had to be creative on how to advertise the perfume liquid itself, not the bottle. The first one was my first project that I didn't get a good grade on, so I remade it to be the second one.
This project had us create a mask with a story. It consisted a lot of math and tables to understand information that went with our theme of our mask. I chose the word breakthrough. The idea of breaking out of a structured system of black and white with blue squiggles coming out of it.
For this project, we had to animate how a word would move. I chose Tiptoe. Though, animation is extremely hard and I didn't realize that until I made this.
Here are the designs I made in high school.
This was the original Design. This ended up being on the back of the shirt.
This was a second idea that became the front right pocket of the t-shirt
This is the logo I made for the play !Artistic Inspiration, by Don Zolidis, when I directed it.
This is the logo I made for the play I wrote, Girlfriend Intervention. This design when on the cast list, playbill, and on all social media posts.
This was the Design I made for a skit I wrote and performed in.
During the summer of 2020, I decided to re-design my old high school designs. The original designs aren't all that wonderful to be honest, so making these designs after a year of graphic design classes really helped me see how much I had learned!
