hot

licks

In each edition, we'll be going over a "Hot Lick" and incorporate it into a taiko context. Hope this series furthers your love of music, exploration of technique, arranging and composition - and most importantly helps you on your journey to finding your sound.

We'll be looking at the Steve Gadd flutter lick - which in essence is an 8-stroke roll, or Para-Diddle-Diddle-Diddle, and incorporating it into a Matsuri/Midare context. Also check out the quintuplet and sextuplet licks too.

An abanico is a rhythm played on the timbales to transition the band from one part of the song into the next. We'll be looking at ways to apply the concept of an abanico to Jack Bazaar by Kris Bergstrom.
