Attaching fasteners to latex presents a fundamental problem: The two materials have different stretchiness (rubber is highly elastic, the fasteners are not.)
You can solve this problem buy adding a non-elastic layer that bonds well with latex – in practical terms, a piece of fabric that has been soaked in liquid latex. For zippers, you can soak the zipper fabric in liquid latex and let it dry. For other types of fasteners, use some non-elastic scrap fabric and soak it in liquid latex. Patches of this latex-coated fabric can be glued to latex wherever the base material needs stabilising for attaching fasteners.
Snap fasteners are mainly offered in three materials: non-stainless steel, brass, and stainless steel. Only stainless steel is suitable for latex work: non-stainless steel will rust when washing the garment, and brass leaches copper into the latex during washing, which deteriorates the latex over time.
KAM snaps are plastic snap fasteners. They do not rust and do not deteriorate the latex.
KAM snaps come in various sizes; for latex work the largest sizes (22/24/T8) are most suitable. They are appropriate for materials up to about 2mm in thickness. They are also available in lots of different colours.
KAM snaps are installed with the help of inexpensive pliers. They are available online and from various online stores and haberdashery stores.
