I have been filming people talking about the afterlife for over a decade, and have reported extensively how I came to this line of questioning. Did you ever have one of those days where nothing goes right for you? Of course, you have. Now imagine being in the afterlife and having every trick you pull blow up in your face, quite literally. Beetlejuice is, for lack of a better word, a man-child: he complains about everything, so is it any wonder all of this happens to him, like his pranks towards his "friends" backfiring and feeling underappreciated by Lydia. In order to teach Beetlejuice a lesson, a representative of the Neitherworld Complaints Department named Clarence was sent to fix him, until Beetlejuice wishes he NEVER went to the Neitherworld. Now, this is important for the story itself: he doesn't wish he wasn't born, but that he essentially just never died and went to the afterlife, essentially never becoming a bio-exorcist nor a pain in the Neitherworld's ass.
As it turns out, Lydia is that one person! Nobody in the Neitherworld might respect Beetlejuice or even like him, but Lydia is the one real friend he's ever known his entire afterlife! Without him around, she has no confidence and never made any friends. Not to mention without any "juice", being he was never Neitherworld Bound, he can't even impress Lydia. This, of course, finally convinced him that while he may not be well loved in death, he's at least got a friend on the other side to keep his "spirits" up. Also, we see him pull off some pretty creative pranks to fuck with everyone! With him around, they'll never become assholes like he is! Classic Beetlejuice!
