IMO, I'd spend way less $ just paying out of pocket for flights for a friend vs the $5K you need to spend to get this "deal." Even if you wanted to use CP, say, 6 times over the next year, if your friend paid out of pocket for 6 flights that cost $300 RT each, they would only pay $1,800, significantly less than the $5K spend required here, which is why I never think these "deals" are worth it.
Regarding timing, it is important to remember the points will not post to your RR account until a few days AFTER the credit card closing date. If you hit the spend threshold on March 1, but your statement doesn't close until March 20 you will not receive points in your RR account until sometime March 21-25 ish. Then companion pass will not be enabled on your account for a few days after that. So it's not 8-12 weeks (usually), but it can take several weeks after you complete the spend.

A6. For the AOTC but not the LLC, qualified tuition and related expenses include amounts paid for books, supplies and equipment needed for a course of study. You do not have to buy the materials from the eligible educational institution. Add amounts paid for these materials to Form 8863 to your other adjusted qualified education expenses.
