The often maligned Jimmy Fallon attraction will receive an event exclusive overlay featuring everyone's favorite ridiculously tall red headed comedian..
No, not you Carrot Top. Go back to Vegas, you rapscallion!
Race Through New York is about to bring the comedic styling of NBC's iconic "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" into the world of The Tonight Show. The premise of the attraction sees Conan and his comedic cohorts traveling back in time to "The Year 2000" in an attempt to salvage Conan's ill-fated Tonight Show run. The lower lobby of the attraction will be completed transformed with fog and green neon lighting, as everyone's favorite band member/punching bag La Bamba continually sings the haunting refrain all the way until we get to the attraction's waiting room. Over and over again. Sinking deeper and deeper into your soul...
"In the year two thousaaaaaaand....!"
*all adult jokes are slightly toned down to support a kid-friendly audience
Once in the lobby, you'll notice the general set up is the same with a few different flourishes to tie it into the Conan theme. Instead of the Ragtime Gals, the main stage will be taken up by Max Weinberg and the Max Weinberg Seven. Most of the band members will be hired musicians that don't have an in-show counterpart, with La Bamba being played by an impersonator and Max Weinberg himself being represented by a skeleton puppet as a running gag for how old Conan's original pre-Andy Ritcher sidekick must be in the years since Conan left Late Night.
A roaming Andy Ritcher impersonator will be interacting with guests, desperately asking if they've seen Conan and holding a shoddy cardboard "WILL SIDEKICK FOR FOOD" sign. In one corner of the room will be a screen attached to the famous Walker Texas Ranger Lever, where guests will have a chance to pull the lever to get one of many randomly generated out of context Walker Texas Ranger clips. Classic moments from the show will be playing on the TV monitors including many clips of "Desk Drive" which sets up the attraction's racing theme.
A cigar chomping pooch.
Guests can also take an exclusive photo of themselves lounging in the famed Pierre Bernard's Recliner of Rage or meet and greet with Pimpbot 3000 and Polly the Peacock serving the same meet n' greet function that Hashtag the Panda served in the Jimmy Fallon waiting room. The safety spiel will be delivered LIVE by a puppet of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, with guests getting special interactions and the opportunity to be roasted by the world's most brutal crowd work comedian as the cigar chomping pooch insults us over not knowing very basic theme park safety regulations.
During the set up to the attraction on screens after Triumph's pre show, Conan tells us that the budget didn't allow them to film any new racing footage for the actual ride, only to replace Jimmy with Conan via shoddy green screen which is very much part of the joke, and the reoccurring Fallon characters being replaced with Conan bits. The attraction will be relatively the same sequence of events just occasionally interrupted by Conan shenanigans and thus has a couple minutes tacked on to the run time.
"I swear, I am NOT digitally replacing Fallon!"
Some of these interruptions will be randomly generated. For example about half way through the race we get a full blown delay from a side character or gag. This delay could either be Pierre Bernard pulling up in his souped up and race ready Recliner of Rage in order to vent to us about how bad Fast and the Furious Supercharged is, Frankenstein wasting a literal minute of our time, or the Walker Texas Ranger Lever randomly cutting from the fully 3D HD attraction footage to the grainy low quality glory of a Walker Texas Ranger cut away.
Another random interruption will be one of three reoccurring characters played by Brian Stack, with either The Interrupter living up to his namesake and bringing the race to a halt, The Ghost Crooner singing us a Brat Pack classic, or the Fantastic! guy simply popping up to compliment Conan's driving on being, well...Fantastic!
"Hey Conan! Your driving is FANTASTIC!"
During the weird underwater tunnel section there will be an impromptu German Disco Light Show that happens as we make our way towards the last lap of the race. German Disco Light Shows are also known to happen roughly every hour or so in the pre show lobby and lasts for about five minutes. Finally, the Kaiju attacking you in the finale can change to be anything from a giant Triumph to the towering Max Weinberg skeleton or even Frankenstein fighting King Kong (in a nod to the original concept for Godzilla vs. Kong) and wasting yet another minute of our time.
German Disco Light Show
The Race Through New York overlay hopes to take a rather irreverent attraction and push it into full blown silly territory, while containing enough variety in the different film randomization and constant surprises happening in the lobby that many guests will be tempted to give the race a second or even third lap during their NBC Late Night!
Taking over the Simpsons Ride on event nights, Sweet Tooth's Wild Ride will see the building being handed over to a slightly more aggressive clown for the night. This Peacock original takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where the Milk Men (delivery drivers like Anthony Mackie's protagonist character) make dangerous drives across wastelands run by roaming gangs with their own gimmicks and crazy vehicles from walled off city to walled off city.
Now guests will get the chance to join this crazy world in a temporary simulator attraction which sees guests race though the streets of a ruined Las Vegas chased down by the violent clown Sweet Tooth, hunted by the mad cop Agent Stone, and also helped(?) by the ever unpredictable Sweet Tooth. Very tongue in cheek, comedic, action packed, and always crazy. Twisted Metal is the perfect fit for a theme park ride even if only for a special event.
After the Community #AndAMovie on Peacock revived interest in the iconic NBC sitcom with its release in 2023 (Date provided by Discussing Film, I did not fact check but presumably it is accurate), interest in the world of Greendale has never been higher! Now, guests will get to enroll and experience life as a Greendale Human Being with this immersive paintball game coming to Soundstage 23 for the Late Night with NBC event!
Inside the soundstage will be a recreation of some of the most iconic locations of Greendale Community College. The library, the cafeteria, a few classrooms, etc. All full of references and easter eggs. Of course, this isn't just a simple walkthrough as guests might be able to guess as they walk in and see paintball stains on every wall. It's time to join the study group for a classic Community Paintball game!
Due to safety and practicality concerns, guests will not be able to play an actual paintball game, but instead it will be Gel Ball which is a safer, mess free alternative that recreates the same experience without the actual paint or the pain. There is still a requirement for all participants to sign a waiver and wear protective equipment. Since there's no actual paint, the protective equipment doubles as a score counter. When the chest or back plate experiences an impact it will add a point to the other team's score. Though the focus is more on the fun experience over the competitive nature and more points can be gained by finding hidden Greendale flags in the course. Also, it is recommended to check in and join a virtual queue early as there are limited spots available!
As part of the promotion for the late night event, the cast of Community and other NBC stars will come together to film themselves playing a real paintball game on the same Greendale court Universal made for the event. Not only leading to some fun promo videos, but also it means that the paintball stains guests see will be authentic and real as that extra touch to make sure this game is streets ahead!
In the grand tradition of Universal’s seasonal events, Late Nights with NBC comes with a brand-new tribute store, dedicated to that enduring staple of weekend nights: Saturday Night Live!
Each room of this tribute store pays homage to a different era of SNL: the original cast, the 80s and 90s, the 2000s, and the most recent casts. Every room features at least two prominent sets from that era. For example, the classic area holds the Olympia Cafe, while the Wayne’s World basement can be found in the 80s/90s section. Genuine props from each era, like a King Ploobis puppet, the Caveman Lawyer’s costume, and Will Ferrell’s More Cowbell costume, are viewable in glass display cases, while period-appropriate television screens play clips from each era.
One of the coolest things found in this tribute store is in the hallway where guests can buy spots for their pictures to go. Instead of guest pictures, this hallway contains a photo of every SNL cast member from the show’s 50 year history, with the years they were on the show inscribed below their names. Longtime fans will have a great time searching for their favorite cast members!
Of course, the best tribute stores feature a collection of signature snacks and treats for guests to purchase. The central element of this store’s selection are the various twisted cakes and pies from the modern Baking Championship series of skits. Enjoy a terrifying, brown Sonic the Hedgehog, or a melted blob of a Cookie Monster. And, of course, Schweddy Balls are also available for purchase. Delicious!
