For this assignment, I was asked to evaluate my social media dependency, and reflect on the impact of social media.
You're fairly reliant on social media, but there are far worse culprits! Still, it's good to be reminded that UK adults spend an average of 8 hrs 41 mins on screens every day, and 4 hours of that on smartphone apps alone (mainly social media). That's about a third of each day checking apps. Do you need to rethink your social media habits and the amount of time you spend scrolling?
I think that the results are mostly true. I use social media a lot, and I don't notice it mainly because it ends up as background noise. But I don't see my use as a dependency to social media, but I definitely have a dependency to my phone in general.
I chose this statistic because I was interested in the reasons people thought social media's impact was negative. For example, I think that clickbait being someone's main reason social media is negative is interesting.
Auxier, B. (2020, October 15). 64% of Americans say social media have a mostly negative effect on the way things are going in the U.S. Today. Pew Research Center. 64% of Americans...
I think that social media has an equal amount of positive and negative impacts. I don't think that one outweighs the other because, for every good thing, you can easily come up with a bad thing and vice-versa. Like with most technology, the power is in the user, so social media isn't inherently bad. I do think it has allowed bad people to feel comfortable doing and saying bad things. Sites like Reddit, often allow people with discriminative ideologies to have a platform. On the other hand, social media has uplifted people who just want to do good or gain knowledge. Easy access to global news is something that people take for granted because it is so common.
Through this project I learned a lot about how adults view the impact of social media. I feel like many older adults in my life use social media more than I do, and they are susceptible to the negatives of using it. I also learned a lot about statistics of social media use, some of which surprised me.
