Class overview
Students will be expected to think deeply, communicate well, and solve challenging problems that require an extended chain of reasoning. They will need to put in the work in order to show mastery of the various concepts and skills of geometry. This can be a challenging course for students for a variety of reasons: being afraid to ask for help, gaps in prerequisite skills/knowledge, bad habits like "doing the math in my head", poor time management, fixed mindset, etc. This class operates at a fast pace and students will need to take responsibility for their own learning to keep up.
Occasionally, students will struggle with the mathematics. These struggles are a healthy part of your student’s intellectual growth and development, just as sweating and strenuous exertion are a part of physical growth and development. When students get stuck, they are expected to be proactive in seeking help directly from teachers, peers, and online resources.
About me
My name is Michael Word and I've been teaching geometry for over 30 years. Geometry was the first math class that I really enjoyed, and I still love learning new geometrical relationships and connections with other disciplines.
When I'm not teaching, I'm usually solving a never-ending set of real-world problems that my 1925 house presents with uncanny regularity.
Both of my kids are recent LASA alumni; my son is class of '22 and my daughter is class of '24 . I feel very honored to be part of the outstanding math team here at LASA.
Office hours
Ms. Weems and myself are the only geometry teachers, but students can attend office hours or get help before school or during lunch at peer tutoring
