Why logical arguments are bad arguments
It is common for people to wish for better arguments in public debates. While the general sentiment might be a good one, it is often accompanied by the idea that we should “use more logic” or that the problem is that people are using logical fallacies. Not only are such appeals generally accompanied by hostility and condescension, but they also often lack any real understanding of what it means to make a good argument. In this post, I will therefore explain what it means to make a logical argument and why fallacies often make for better arguments.
Should Science be Ideological?
The opinion that science should be ideology-free is close to universal among economists and – I suspect – the general public. However, in many other disciplines, it is fashionable to argue that science is always ideological or that the idea of an ideology-free science is ideological itself. In this article, I will attempt to explain the argument behind this view and why I think it is misguided and does fundamental damage to the reputation and prestige of science in the public mind.
