“Chimney Sweeper” IS an Interactive story/game inspired by the poem “The Chimney Sweeper” by William Blake. The story depicts the grim lives of child chimney sweepers in 18th-century England. I was intrigued by this story because The poem offers a critique of society's exploitation of children. Through this grim and sad story, i made the game follow a pattern where each day, a child wakes up to do their job as a chimney sweeper. the player will be tasked to sweep the chimney to a certain extent each day. But how long can The child last?
I used cardboard to build the chimney and drew the brick design myself on paper. I used foil to make the broom and covered the interior of the chimney with foil as well so every time the player sweeps the inside of the chimney, this will trigger an action on scratch.
I chose blueish gray colors for the game to set the grim and depressive mood of the young boy’s daily life.
The player is put in the young boys shoes and has to go through what feels like endless days of sweeping and the player's only reward seems to be to look forward to the possibility of seeing better days ahead.
This game Through its visuals and game play offered the depressive mood I envisioned when I read “Chimney Sweeper” BY William Blake. Here is the scratch link: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/940900744
