Casted away is a pixel art narrative driven game made with bitsy. this game follows the main character who is an investigator gathering clues on the case of a missing girl, Sophie. The girl’s mother is highly afflicted by this and as the investigator you have to try your best to gather clues to uncover the mystery behind Sophie’s disappearance. Interacting with NPCs and items around you are the only way to gather clues and resolve the case. beware some things might not be as they seem and do not underestimate the magical possibilities behind the girl’s disappearance.
In this area, the investigator gets to talk to the mother of the missing girl and explore the victim’s room.
In these areas, the investigator will have to explore the places where the missing girl was last seen.
This is the final area the investigator will explore to finally find the missing girl but everything is not what it seems...
Bitsy is a very simple tool used to make games and although it is quite intuitive to use to make simple projects, it becomes complex to use when trying to make more interesting games.
In bitsy i basically had to use this dialog system to “code” the game and make the player collect items such as keys to unlock doors or trigger other actions in the game.
I had to get creative with this dialog system because since my game was an investigation game, the player mainly got clues through talking to NPCs and using the information from talking to one npc, the player could trigger more dialog when talking to another npc. Basically since the dialog wasn’t a physical item It was hard for me to figure out a way for the character to “collect” clues That weren’t physical. So I solved this issue by turning specific words in a dialog into items so that when an npc said a specific word the player would “collect” the word as an item. I did this so that if the player collected this word item, the player would be able to unlock more dialog for another npc.
For my first time using bitsy to create a game, I was very proud of this project and I think the interactions I created went along with the narrative of the game. Not To mention the sound effects and music added to the player's immersion into the game. as a whole, I was proud of this game and I felt it helped me realize I could get creative when solving the issues to my problems.
