1. What is Ryukyu karate?
Ryukyu karate, also known as Okinawan karate, is a traditional martial art from Okinawa. It focuses on self-defense, discipline, kata (forms), and practical techniques, blending physical training with mental focus and respect.
2. Do I need to be fit to start?
No! Classes are suitable for beginners of all fitness levels. Training will gradually build strength, flexibility, and stamina.
3. What should I wear to class?
Comfortable clothing is fine for your first few classes. Students should then wear a karate gi (uniform) and a belt with the best value suits available online. We train bare foot. Jewellery should removed or covered for safety and nails should be relatively short.
4. Is karate safe?
Yes. Ryukyu karate emphasizes controlled movements and safety. Sparring and partner drills are done with care, under the instructor’s supervision.
5. What age can start learning?
Our club accepts children as young as 5, while adults of any age can start.
6. Will I have to fight or spar?
Sparring (kumite) is part of training but is controlled and progressive. Beginners start with drills and slowly move to light, supervised sparring as they gain confidence and skill.
7. How long before I can earn a belt?
Progress depends on attendance, effort, and skill development. We have a structured grading system, starting with white belt and moving through coloured belts to black belt. Regular practicing at home will help you achieve gradings.
8. Do I need prior martial arts experience?
No. Classes are designed for beginners as well as experienced martial artists.
9. What is kata, and why is it important?
Kata are pre-arranged sequences of movements that teach technique, balance, timing, and self-defense principles. Practicing kata is central to Ryukyu karate.
10. How often should I train?
We offer one class per week but consistent practice at home is important in order to progress.
11. Can I join if I have an injury or health condition?
Always check with your doctor first. Instructors can often modify exercises to suit your needs safely.
12. Can I try a class before committing?
We encourage newcomers to try a free trial class to see if it’s a good fit for you.
