Is tutoring required?
Yes! Tutoring is required to maintain membership status within the Langley Science Honor Society! You may specialize in Regular/Honors/AP Biology, Chemistry, and/or Physics and/or choose to specialize in the electives offered at Langley; Human Anatomy, APES, Oceanography, Astronomy, or Forensics! You must have taken/are taking the courses you tutor. At least one hour of tutoring is required per quarter.
How often does the SHS meet?
We try to meet around once per quarter, however, we may meet up to twice a month if needed. If service opportunities are happening, they are optional but you are encouraged to attend!
How can I contact the SHS for tutoring?
If you are in need of a tutor in a certain subject, go and see your teacher about setting up a meeting! We will also be posting flyers around the science hallway and in classrooms to sign up for extra help!
What are Chem/Physics/Bio clubs and are they affiliated with the SHS?
Yes! The Chemistry, Physics, and Biology Clubs work with SHS to provide extra help for Langley science students. Our tutors can also help you with test corrections and/or homework! But remember, you can always reserve an individual tutor for your needs if you don't have a schedule that works with the clubs.
SHS Members: Do I need to log my hours? How long do I have to log hours for each quarter?
You have up until the day before the end of the quarter to log hours for your quarterly requirement (3 hours). We strongly encourage you to log the hours as soon as you complete them, but we understand that this is not always possible.
I do science, environmental, or medical volunteer hours outside of school. May I log these too?
Go ahead! You may log as many hours as you wish that were completed outside school, as long as they are of a scientific background and you can provide appropriate evidence you completed the activities! Just remember to complete your required tutoring hour of service each quarter too.
What should I do if my tutee isn't responding to my emails?
You may also contact them via their cell phone. If they are ghosting, no worries! We can always find you a new tutee or the SHS may help mediate the situation. At any time if you feel that your tutee isn't taking you seriously, please talk to an Executive Board officer!
